myofascial release (MFR)
Myofascial Release (MFR) is a form of self-massage performed using myofascial balls of various types and sizes - or simply tennis balls, yoga blocks, a foam roller, or your own body weight.
A moderate, sustained compression is applied to specific areas of the body, using gravity and micro-movements to achieve a range of results:
Deep relaxation
Greater mobility
Hydration and nourishment of the tissues
Enhanced body awareness (proprioception)
Improved venous and lymphatic circulation
Functional reorganization of the tissue layers

Myofascial release produces immediate, tangible results in terms of mobility, ease, body awareness, and overall well-being. It does not interfere with athletic performance. It possesses a quality that makes it exceptionally suited to yoga: it works hand-in-hand with relaxation.
It can be used as a preparation for movement, as a tool for deeper listening, or as a way to unwind at the end of the day.
The students I worked with, liked it so much they wanted more. It is indeed highly enjoyable, and just 30 to 90 seconds per muscle group is enough to feel the benefits.
Fascia
The term fascia refers to a component of the connective tissue composed mainly of collagen and hyaluronic acid.
Fascia runs continuously from head to toe, communicating internally and with the nervous system.
Its functions are incredibly diverse: it contains, separates, connects, protects, and transports substances. It hosts a vast number of nerve endings and serves as a primary pathway for the lymphatic and immune systems. There are different types of fascial tissue — from superficial to deep, from more rigid to highly pliable — all interconnected and in constant communication. Scientific studies demonstrating its clinical importance are relatively recent.
Myofascial tissue — the specific tissue we engage with MFR — covers every single fiber of muscle tissue, weaving directly into tendons and ligaments. The collagen within the myofascia possesses qualities of both immense strength (it is structurally stronger than steel) and elasticity. It is produced and renewed by specialized cells that are stimulated primarily by rapid, vigorous, and repeated movements.
Its properties can change with a sedentary lifestyle, poor posture, trauma, injury, aging, or even an excess of repeated movement - like in athletic performance. It can become rigid, dehydrated, and fibrous in places. Tissue that is too fibrous or poorly organized can restrict mobility and generate tenderness or pain.
Fortunately, there are many tools to reverse this process, one of which is Myofascial Release.
